Communication |
It is important to remember that when it comes to safety for children of all ages, communication is the key! Talking with your kids about safety is critical in making certain they understand that whether you are close by or not, it is ultimately up to them to make the right decisions to help ensure their own safety, as well as the safety of those around them. |
 |
At Home |
While home may seem like one of the safest places for your kids to be, it can also be one of the most dangerous. There are countless accidents just waiting to happen if the right precautions are not taken to help prevent them. While at home, your kids should always remember these tips:
• Never leave the house/yard unless a parent or guardian says it’s ok and knows where they are going. • If home alone, never answer the phone or the door unless they know that a family member or close family friend is on the other end. • Never tell anyone that they are home alone. • Never attempt to use the stove, oven, washing machine, dish washer or other appliance without the help of a parent. • Never attempt to take a bath or shower unless a parent is close by to assist if needed. • Always wear a helmet and other protective gear when riding a bicycle, scooter, skateboard or using rollerblades/roller skates. |
 |
Online |
While the internet has revolutionized the way we communicate and do business, it can also pose a great deal of danger for young children if not monitored properly. When it comes to using the internet, make sure your kids know to:
• Always ask your permission before using the internet, so you can you can effectively monitor their activities. • Never give out personal information, such as name, address, phone number or pictures to ANYONE under any circumstance. • Tell a parent immediately if anyone contacts them and makes them feel uncomfortable in any way. • As a parent, keep your family computer in a highly visible area and limit the amount of time your kids can use the internet each night. Also, make certain to utilize the parental control feature on your computer to prevent your kids from viewing inappropriate material. |
 |
At School |
School is one of several places your kids can go on a daily basis free of your parental supervision. While teachers and school administrators do a great job making safety for kids a priority, it is also important for your children to understand the things they can do to ensure their own safety when no one is watching. When at school, make certain your kids know to:
• Never leave the classroom or other supervised area without the permission of a teacher. • Follow posted classroom rules and safety guidelines at all times. • Tell a teacher immediately if anyone makes them feel threatened or uncomfortable. • If walking to or from school, do so in groups or with a trusted adult present, and always exercise extreme caution when crossing any street (obey a crossing guard if one is present). • Never leave school with a stranger, even if that person claims to have a good reason for wanting them to do so. |
